The single most consequential decision in a parent-visa case is the contributory-versus-standard pathway choice, and we walk through it carefully at consultation with realistic numbers in front of us. - Pathway selection. The contributory vs standard parent decision alone changes the family's life by 20+ years. Getting it wrong is unfixable later.
- Sponsor preparation including Assurance of Support setup. Many parent-visa cases stall on the AoS income test; we assess this early.
- Centrelink AoS lodgement and bond setup (currently $14,000 for a single sponsor or $10,000 each for joint sponsors, refundable after 10 years).
- Joint sponsorship structures across multiple adult children where pooling income makes the AoS achievable — often the unlock for Indian, Punjabi and Filipino families with multiple Australian-resident siblings.
- Health and character preparation, including older-applicant medical-risk planning and health-waiver strategy.
- Parent-visa queue tracking and coordination across multiple linked applications.

A Wauchope family wanted to bring an elderly mother out of Punjab. Widowed, in her late seventies, the standard 103 queue would have outlived her. We moved them onto the 143 contributory pathway, set up the Assurance of Support, structured joint sponsorship across two adult children to meet the Centrelink income test, and the visa was granted within the expected window. She now lives with her son's family in Wauchope, grandchildren close by. Names withheld.

The contributory and standard parent queues are very different
The 143 contributory pathway is currently measured in years (6–9); the 103 standard queue is now measured in decades (30+ and growing). Choosing between them is one of the biggest financial decisions a family makes — we walk through it with realistic numbers in front of us. For most families with parents over 60, the contributory pathway is the realistic option.

Currently around 6–9 years for the 143 (subject to annual allocations). Times shift as the cap changes work through the queue.
The second instalment alone is currently over $40,000 per applicant (indexes each July). Combined with first-instalment fees, AoS bond, medicals, police checks and our professional fees, total cost per applicant is typically $45,000–$55,000. For two parents that's roughly $100,000+. We cost it out clearly at consultation.
A legally binding commitment by an Australian sponsor (or sponsors jointly) to repay any social-security benefits the applicant receives in their first 10 years. It must be lodged with Centrelink and supported by three years of income evidence. The bond is refunded after 10 years if no Centrelink payments are made.
There are options — the 870 sponsored parent temporary visa, long-stay visitor visas, and onshore application options like the 864 (with bridging-visa status during the wait). We map the "while waiting" strategy at consultation.
We assess this carefully at consultation. A "significant cost to the Australian health system" can lead to refusal on health grounds, but health waivers may be available in family-visa categories including parent visas. We don't lodge blind — the waiver strategy is planned from day one.
